History of the North Metro REALTORS® Association

The formation of ANOKA COUNTY ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS® was a vision of 12 professional real estate brokers in Anoka County back in 1955. The vision finally became a reality on December 22, 1955 at the Castle Falls Restaurant in Anoka. Charles Koons was elected the first President and Thelma Donaldson was elected the first Secretary/Treasurer.

On March 29, 1956, Mr. Bernie Rice, Executive Vice President of the Minnesota Association of REALTORS® and a representative from the National Association, presented the board with its charter. The jurisdiction of the Board at that time was all of Anoka County. In 1963, the board presented Marlowe McCady with their first REALTOR® OF THE YEAR Award and added Elk River and Big Lake to the jurisdiction of the board.

In 1973 the Membership had grown to 86. Seeing a need to provide more services to its members the leadership hired its first paid staff on October 1, 1973. In 1979 the Anoka County Board began its journey into MLS history as a participant in the Minneapolis Association's service. A MLS staff person was hired and the association began inputting listings into the system.

In February 1984 the association, now providing services and benefits to over 750 members, moved into its own building on Robinson Drive. Today the association has around 1,000 members, and a paid staff of five. The association provides valuable service to its members and the community by fighting for private property rights, real estate disclosure laws and protection of those rights for those living within its jurisdiction. Through community service involvement the association maintains a strong presence in public service. On October 1, 1997 the Anoka County Association of REALTORS? changed its name to: NORTH METRO REALTORS® ASSOCIATION. The association changed names to represent the members it serves. Many members have offices in counties, other than Anoka County, such as Sherburne, Isanti, and Wright.

The Anoka County Association of REALTORS2 has had strong leadership through the years. It has taken many progressive steps forward; always keeping in mind the members and their needs as well as the communities that they serve.

Presidents of the Association

The association is grateful for the contributions made by its presidents. These special individuals have given free countless hours and unselfish leadership needed to develop the association into the strong organization it is today. Their dedicated efforts have worked for the betterment of the entire real estate profession. We extend our sincere thanks to the following members who have so diligently served this association as its president.
